Modems: Class 1 and Business Class
|
|
In order for modems to properly work with Microsoft Small
Business Server (SBS) especially the Fax Service, the modems should be
Class 1 rated devices and designated by the modem manufacturers as
"business class."
If the documentation or product packaging is not available
to confirm conformance to these requirements, or you'll want to contact
the modem manufacturer to verify the OEM's claim of Class 1 compatibility.
In addition to confirm that modems are in fact class 1 and
business class, you can do so through Hyper Terminal.
|
|
-
1) First make sure none of the three-modem dependent
services in Small Business Server, Fax Service, Modem Sharing Service
, and Remote Access Service, are in use. For external modems, the
easiest way is often to just look at the LEDs.
-
2) Then Temporarily stop the three-modem dependent
services in Small Business Server: Fax, Modem Sharing, and Remote
Access Service. You can stop these three modem-releated services from
the Control Panel Services applet.
-
3) Next, open HyperTerminal from the Small Business
Server Start Menu, under Programs, Accessories, Hyper Terminal.
-
4) When prompted to create a New Connection, click
Cancel.
-
5) Type ATZ to reset the modem.
-
6) Issue the AT to take the modem "off
hook". Assuming the speaker volume is turned up, you should be
able to hear dial tone on the modem line.
-
7) To see if the device is in fact a Class 1 modem,
type AT+FCLASSS=? (One of the responses should include the digit
"1").
