(In many circles of those in the technical know outside of
Microsoft, Proxy Server has long since been discredited as a very early
generation firewall lacking in many fundamental capabilties.)
Proxy Server 2.0 and SBS 4.5
With SBS 4.5, there was no need to purchase or manually
install the Proxy Server version upgrade as SBS 4.5 now includes Proxy
Server 2.0 integrated within the unattended SBS 4.5 setup.
To help assure that novice small business solution
providers and administrators keep their SBS system as secure as possible,
SBS 4.5 includes two defaults that dramatically enhance the server's
security.
RAS Default Configuration Sessings in SBS 4.5
First the Remote Access Service (RAS) is not configured to
be a RAS gateway.
When RAS is automatically installed by the SBS 4.5
unattended setup, a default is preselected that makes it so that when RAS
clients connect to the server, they can only see the server and not the
workstations on the network. If SBS end users connecting over RAS need
access to workstations on the SBS network, this default can always be
changed.
However, the preselected default greatly increases network
security.
With SBS 4.5, the Remote Access Service (RAS) is
preconfigured to enhance network security by allowing RAS clients to only
connect to the server and not workstations on the network.
Private IP Address Block for Proxy Server
In addition to SBS 4.5 defaulting to increased RAS
security, SBS 4.5 is shipped with a default IP address of 10.0.0.2. This
address is non-routable and secure from the Internet. SBS 4.5 provides
additional protection from the Internet through dynamic packet filtering
in Proxy Server 2.0. Again with SBS 4.5, the server's IP address
defaults to 10.0.0.2, which is a non-routable secure IP address. Microsoft
strongly cautions against changing this default.
