Administering Remote Access Service (RAS)

If you've been charged with selling and supporting a Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) network, there's a good chance you'll need help with learning about the administering of Remote Access Service (RAS).

Native Tools for Administering Remote Access Service

Regardless of whether the developers of Small Business Server didn't believe that Remote Access Service would be that popular, or perhaps that wanted to be very conservative with the Remote Access Service security implications...

Either way the Remote Access Service configuration choice is by default not enabled in Small Business Server. So unless you instruct the User Access Wizard otherwise, none of the user accounts created for a Small Business Server network will be able use the Remote Access Service (RAS) for connecting into the Small Business Server system.

To enable the right, or permission if you will, to "Use a Modem to Access the Server Computer", simply check the appropriate box in the Select Additional Access Rights dialog box in User Access Wizard.

So in terms of the most basic administering of Remote Access Service, this should come first... where you granting a user account the right to connect to the server through the Remote Access Service (RAS) and Dial-Up Networking (DUN).

Resource Kit Tools for Administering Remote Access Service

The Microsoft Small Business Server Resource Kit also includes some tools designed for monitoring underlying modems used for Remote Access Service... so this is another place to pay attention to when administering Remote Access Service.

  • TAPI.exe - a command line utility that displays the status of TAPI lines such as connected, idle, dialing, and so forth.

  • Timon.exe - a Windows NT service that the TAPIstate client can tap into to monitor the state of TAPI lines. Timon needs to be started first (timon.exe /service) before the TAPIstate client can be started.

  • TAPIstate.exe - GUI-based tool that provides status information on the TAPI lines and is a client of the Timon service.

Troubleshooting Pointers When Administering Remote Access Service

In the event you need to troubleshoot an analog phone line on the Small Business Server system side for inbound direct-dial Remote Access Service, there are a number of rudimentary steps you can try to narrow down the source of trouble.

  • Is the wiring from the telephone company network interface, at your client's office, to the inside jack location run and terminated properly?

  • Can you get a dial tone when you plug an analog phone into the phone jack?

  • Can you dial out on that phone line to place a voice call to a local number? To a long distance number? Are there any restrictions or dialing codes required?

  • Can you call into that phone line/jack to receive a voice call?
