SBS 4.5 and NT Server 4.0 Service Packs
The SBS 4.5 setup begins with an automated installation of
NT Server 4.0 and Service Pack 3 (SP3).
There are several SBS server components developed
specifically for SBS 4.0, and carried forward into SBS 4.5, that have
system file dependencies on SP3. So even though SBS 4.5 requires SP4 to be
applied both before and after the BackOffice Server applications are
installed, SP3 is installed automatically and immediately following NT
Server 4.0 installation.
Once the NT Server 4.0 portion of the SBS 4.5 unattended
setup is complete and the unattended setup for the BackOffice Server
applications is underway, SP4 is automatically applied to the SBS 4.5
system.
How Service Pack 4 (SP4) Factors into Other SBS Applications
With NT Server 4.0 and the integration of SP3, SBS 4.0
included a web server based on Internet Information Server (IIS) 3.0. This
web server is required for, among other things, the HTML-based Manage
Server console.
Through Microsoft’s limited time free Internet
Technologies Offer Kit, SBS end users were able to get a free version
upgrade to Proxy Server 2.0, a special SBS Proxy Server upgrade wizard, a
white paper detailing the steps for the Proxy Server upgrade, and the
Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack (NTOP).
Through the NTOP installation, SBS 4.0’s web server
could be upgraded from IIS 3.0 to 4.0. Under SBS 4.5, the NTOP is
integrated into the unattended installation so that IIS 4.0 is
automatically installed as part of the standard SBS 4.5 setup routine.
