Hardware Configurations Confirmation Pages

The Magic Wizards for Hardware Configurations

Just as Small Business Server 4.5 brings improved setup flexibility for specifying target directories and folders, as well as for importing user accounts, Small Business Server 4.5 provides much greater flexibility for installing various hardware devices through a series of hardware configuration confirmation wizards.

Under Small Business Server 4.0, many support problems with the Small Business Server Fax Server were traced back to mismatches between modem firmware, unimodem ID, and the .inf driver file.

New to Small Business Server 4.5, the Installed Modem Wizard makes an effort to confirm that there is in fact a match between the modem firmware and the device driver that you select.  The Small Business Server web site also includes a page with a hyperlink to popular modem device drivers on the 3Com web site.

Modems and Ease of Hardware Configurations

While Small Business Server 4.5 is still designed for unattended installation, the Small Business Server product team wanted to provide more flexibility for testing and reconfirming the modem configuration and device driver selection.

The Installed Modem Wizard allows you to view which modem or modems were auto detected during the unattended installation of NT Server 4.0. From there, the wizard compares the selected device driver and corresponding unimodem ID with the firmware of the modem and alerts you through a yellow or red flag to any suspicious compatibility problems that may arise between the .inf file and firmware. So this way you can head off any hardware configurations problems right at the outset.

The Diagnostic "Flags" for Problems with Hardware Configurations

If a yellow exclamation point appears, the wrong modem driver may have been installed. The wizard is advising you to double-check your modem driver version against your firmware version to insure that the proper device driver is selected. If a red x appears, Small Business Server 4.5 has determined that your modem was installed during NT Server 4.0 setup as an "undetected modem".

Under Beta 2 of Small Business Server 4.5, the red X referred to a "standard modem"; however, the wording was changed to "undetected the modem" to underscore the huge potential for future problems. The Small Business Server 4.5 Fax Service will not operate properly unless the undetected modem device driver is replaced by the proper device driver for the modem.

Installed Modem Wizard and Hardware Configurations

New to Small Business Server 4.5, the Installed Modem Wizard helps prevent potentially troublesome mismatches between modem firmware revisions and device driver versions.

The Installed Modem Wizard allows you to view and modify the modem(s) that were auto detected during NT Server 4.0 unattended install.

The Installed Modem Wizard allows you to easily compare the device driver version to the modem firmware revision to assess whether or not there's a match.

Hardware Confirmation Pages for Hardware Configurations

Small Business Server 4.5 also introduces hardware confirmation pages that you let you review and modify, if need be, the hardware selection and device drivers for the disk controller(s), video adapters, network card(s), and other mass storage devices that were auto detected during the unattended installation of NT Server 4.0.

The hardware confirmation page appears just after you complete the Installed Modem Wizard. Both steps are completed after Windows NT Server 4.0 and Service Pack 4 have been installed, but before the installation of core Small Business Server applications.

New to Small Business Server 4.5, the hardware confirmation pages allow you to review and modify the hardware configurations selection and device drivers for the disk controllers, network cards, and video adapter that were auto detected during the unattended NT Server 4.0 setup.
