Server Console Redesign in Small Business Server

Based on feedback from computer resellers and PSS technical support engineers, Microsoft made a few key enhancements in the Small Business Server 4.5 server console.

The Small Business Server Console was still based entirely on HTML and Active Server Pages. Many computer resellers had difficulty with server console performance and response time when remotely administering the server console over dial-up analog and ISDN lines.

The Small Business Server console pages have a fair amount of graphics to supplement the HTML pages. Although the Small Business Server 4.0 console pages were aesthetically pleasing, the size of the graphics files ultimately made the console difficult to administer remotely.

Under Small Business Server 4.5, the large image files are removed form the console and replaced with simpler, smaller image files. The Small Business Server 4.0 Manage Server console has also been renamed under Small Business Server 4.5 to the Small Business Server Console.

New Server Console Total Space Indicator

The Small Business Server 4.5 Console also has a new indicator that displays how much total space is on each drive volume as well as a graphical representation of how much free disk space is remaining. This keeps critical information right in front of computer resellers and small business end user administrators.

You can tell at a glance approximately how much disk space is remaining on each volume by looking at the newly redesigned Small Business Server Console home page.

Server Console Services Monitoring

The Small Business Server Console home page also helps you stay on stop of any critical services that may have stopped. Rather than having to examine the Event Viewer logs and the Control Panel Services applet, the Small Business Server Console home page now displays a big red X and displays the name of any of the key NT Server 4.0 services that are stopped.

You no longer have to visit the Services applet or runn "net start" commands just to restart a stopped service. Simply double-click on the big red X.

Just like the new drive space indicators on the console, the stalled services indicators also help keep this critical information front and center. No more digging around in two places just to figure out that a service is stopped.

The newly redesigned Small Business Server Console home page makes it easy to identify any critical services that have stopped.

The Small Business Server Console also gives computer resellers a great opportunity to add value to their Small Business Server 4.5 installations by customizing the server console pages.
