Attracting the Gainfully Employed, Underemployed or Unemployed?
For your particular computer reseller or systems
integrator business, newspaper classified ads may be a great tool to
supplement online recruiting. However, your experience with them depends a
lot on the demographics of the local newspaper readership.
If you're advertising for network systems engineers on
web-based career sites or placing classified ads in the local newspaper,
you're only going to attract candidates who are actively looking to change
jobs. Remember, many of the best candidates for a given position like
network systems engineer are already gainfully employed with another firm
Connecting up with these type of potential "candidates" is
generally much more challenging.
Employee Referral Programs for Network Systems Engineers
Many computer resellers and systems integrators have also
found great success in setting up employee referral programs to boost
their recruiting efforts for network systems engineers.
With this type of program, your existing staff gets
compensated for their "word of mouth" candidate referrals that
ultimately result in new hires for network systems engineers. Typically,
some type of pre-determined fixed-amount bonus is paid out to the
referring employee once the new hire has completed a certain length of
service with your firm.
Local Colleges for Recruiting Network Systems Engineers
If your computer reseller or systems integrator firm
happens to be located near a college or university, internships or less
formal part-time college hires can also provide a big boost on the
staffing front.
Employing college students provides a myriad of benefits.
You get your company's name out on campus as an employer of choice.
Students get to build their real-world skills while in school. Your firm
gets to work with students, who are generally highly motivated, and could
be great potential permanent, full-time staff members during their
semester breaks and ultimately following graduation.
In addition, every semester or two, you'll get access to a
new group of first-year students who may quite eager to learn the
"ins" and "outs" of being a network systems engineer
or developer for a small business computer reseller or systems integrator.
Traditionally, college students, in return for getting
significant hands-on experience, were willing to work for relatively low
hourly pay. However, with the IT job market in its present "bull
market" state, it's hard to see many college students joining and
staying on your Small Business rollout team for minimum wage.
And remember to plan ahead. College students often need
time off to study during midterms and final exams. Make sure you have
adequate backup staff for network systems engineers so that your small
business clients are not left in a lurch three or four times a year.
And don't forget that local high schools and vocational
schools can also be excellent sources for recruiting an "eager to
learn" part-time work force... for bolstering your company's network
systems engineer staffing resources.
